Public Interest Advocate Rodaline Imoru Ayarna has urged Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi to seek reconciliation with the judge handling his contempt of court case.
Speaking on Newsfile, Mrs. Ayarna highlighted the challenges of prosecuting Members of Parliament for contempt, stating, “We can’t continue running around trying to catch somebody that is almost impossible to catch.”
She also acknowledged past criticisms of the judiciary, noting that the judicial system had come under intense scrutiny in the previous regime.
“I believe that the judiciary went under a lot of bashing in the previous regime for so many negative things,” she said, expressing hope that the courts would be given a chance to restore their credibility.
Mrs. Ayarna emphasized the need for public trust in the judiciary, urging Ghanaians to believe in the courts’ impartiality.
“It is very important that all Ghanaians have faith in the judiciary and believe that they are being nationalistic and not partisan or anything,” she added.
As a way forward, she advised Kumi to make amends with the judge, suggesting that reconciliation could be a step toward resolving the issue.
“This MP should find a way to pacify the judge if possible,” she recommended.
Kumi was convicted on Wednesday, February 19, for proceeding with his swearing-in despite an injunction barring him.
