Akufo-Addo’s Supreme Court nominee a threat to anti-gay bill – Sponsors claim

-

Sponsors of the Anti-LGBTQ bill have stated that one of President Akufo-Addo’s nominees to the Supreme Court, Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, poses a threat to their bill.

The nominee faced intense questioning due to an article he wrote advocating for the property rights of same-sex couples to be respected and protected.

The NDC MP for South Dayi, at the Appointments Committee, Rockson Dafeamekpor suggested that the nominee would likely seek to overturn their bill if appointed to the Supreme Court.

But Prof Richard Frimpong Oppong strongly rejected this position saying “I have clearly explained the subject matter that I wrote about.”

“I have indicated the caveat that we put in the paper. I have clearly indicated that if you approve me as a justice of the Supreme Court, my responsibility is to apply the laws of Ghana.

“And I clearly indicated to you what the law of Ghana is, or once the bill is assented, what the law of Ghana will be. The responsibility of a judge is to apply the law, not to espouse any views through their judgment, that will be a totally wrong use of the judiciary rule,” he said on Tuesday, August 13.

Meanwhile, the approval of the two individuals nominated by President Akufo-Addo to the Supreme Court is currently hanging in the balance, as the Appointments Committee has failed to reach a consensus.
