Akufo Addo’s directive on gov’t vehicles a step toward accountability – Governance expert

-

A former United Nations (UN) Governance Adviser, Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah, has praised President Akufo Addo’s directive to appointees to return all government vehicles by January 3, 2025.

He described it as a significant move toward accountability and transparency.

The directive requires outgoing Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, and political appointees, including Chairpersons and Members of Statutory Boards and Corporations, to return all government vehicles.

The President’s office emphasized that no official vehicles should be retained or acquired by appointees of the current administration.

The directive has garnered widespread public support, with many Ghanaians viewing it as a critical step toward promoting responsible governance and protecting public assets.

In an interview with Adom News, Professor Agyemang-Duah described President Akufo-Addo’s directive as a bold step.

“This is a bold and commendable step by the President. It addresses longstanding concerns about government vehicles being misappropriated or auctioned off as personal property. This directive sets a strong precedent,” he said.

Professor Agyemang-Duah further advocated for legislative reforms to ensure the sustainability of this initiative.

“I strongly urge the next administration to collaborate with Parliament to enact a law preventing state officials from purchasing government vehicles. This will safeguard public resources from misuse,” he suggested.
