Akufo-Addo weakened Ghana’s judiciary with his appointments – Lawyer Ansa-Asare

-

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Lawyer Ansa-Asare, has criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo for the deterioration of Ghana’s judicial system, attributing it to certain appointments made during his tenure.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Ansah Asare expressed that Akufo-Addo’s judicial appointments undermined the independence of the judiciary, leading to the current issues.

“I blame former President Akufo-Addo for these problems because, during his administration, he weakened the judiciary. He made certain appointments, and those benefiting from them couldn’t tell him the truth,” he remarked.

He specifically questioned the appointment of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, describing it as premature.

“When Gertrude Torkornoo was made Chief Justice, I questioned it because it wasn’t time for her to be in that position. Mahama should be allowed to go ahead with what he is doing because it is in the constitution,” he added.

Mr. Ansa-Asare’s comments come as President John Mahama has initiated consultations with the Council of State regarding three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo.

These petitions have been forwarded to the Council of State, which is expected to review them and advise the President in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
