Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Namibia’s founding President, Sam Nujoma.
Dr. Nujoma died on Saturday at age 95 in the capital, Windhoek.
In a tribute on social media, Akufo-Addo eulogized Nujoma’s legacy.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of H.E. Dr. Sam Nujoma, Founding President of the Republic of Namibia and one of the heroes of African liberation.
“The late First President of Namibia’s life will continue to be celebrated for his heroic leadership of the people of Namibia, not only in the fight for independence from colonial rule but in laying the foundation for a secure, prosperous, and democratic nation,” he mourned.
Akufo-Addo conveyed his condolences to President Nangolo Mbumba, the people of Namibia, Nujoma’s widow and children, and the leadership of his SWAPO party.
Dr. Nujoma was a key figure in Namibia’s struggle for independence from South Africa, which was achieved in 1990.
He helped establish the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) in the 1960s and later became Namibia’s first president, serving from 1990 to 2005.
Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba confirmed Nujoma’s passing in a statement, noting that he had been hospitalized for the past three weeks due to an illness from which he “could not recover.”
