President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned Phase 2 of the Tema Motorway Interchange, designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
Speaking at the event, the President emphasized the economic significance of the project, stating, “By reducing delays and eliminating gridlock, the Tema Motorway Interchange will expedite the movement of goods, enhance trade facilitation, and stimulate economic activity.”
The $33 million project, funded through a grant from the Japanese government, is expected to drive economic growth not only in Ghana but across the ECOWAS region. The combined cost of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the interchange totals $91 million.
The development stems from an agreement signed in October 2021 between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Ghana.
This partnership, built on a long-standing bilateral relationship, aims to provide quality infrastructure to support economic growth.
President Akufo-Addo reiterated his administration’s commitment to road development as a cornerstone of national progress.
He described the project as part of a broader strategy to decentralize economic opportunities and promote equitable development nationwide.
Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye highlighted the durability of the construction, stating that the steel used is designed to last for at least 70 years.
He also emphasized the project’s potential to improve vehicular traffic and facilitate the swift movement of goods and people, benefiting both Ghana and the wider sub-region.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye called for proper maintenance of the facility to preserve its long-term functionality.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover cautioned residents of Tema against turning the interchange into a hawking zone or placing containers and kiosks in the area.
“We will not tolerate any containers or kiosks here, and people should not turn this space into a sleeping place,” he warned. He also expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo on behalf of the people of the Greater Accra Region.
JICA’s Country Director, Suzuki Momoko, noted that the project employed over 160 workers during its construction phase, contributing to local capacity building.
Ahead of the inauguration, President Akufo-Addo inspected ongoing work on the Accra-Tema Motorway, reiterating his administration’s dedication to improving Ghana’s road infrastructure.
