The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has said the growing youth unemployment is a ticking time bomb which must, as a matter of urgency, be addressed.
However, the former President believes the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government has no solution to the problem.
Mahama argues that, the ruling government has increased the unemployment rate from 8.4 percent to 14.7 percent in eight years.
Mr Mahama has asserted the hundreds of young people who throng his various campaign grounds have hope in a future NDC government to turn things around.
“Youth unemployment is the main issue. The youth came out in their numbers and it is clear it is a ticking time bomb for us as a country. We need to accelerate the economy.
We need to invest in the areas of the economy that will provide decent and sustainable jobs for young people and we need to do that urgently.
“Certainly, the current government has no panacea for youth unemployment. Because they have taken it from 8.4% to 14.7% in just eight years but when they talk about creating about 2 million jobs, you ask yourself where are the jobs,” he stated.
According to him, there is the need for immediate acceleration of the economy by investing in job-producing programmes and projects, which he says, will bring comfort to the youth.
But, these solutions, he believes rest solely within the vision of the NDC.
Mr Mahama has accused government of playing propaganda with such critical national issues, urging Ghanaians to vote the NPP out of power.
