The United Nations Resident Coordinator to Ghana, Charles Abani has said Ghana is not yet at the point to declare a state of emergency in wake of the havoc wrecked by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
According to him, there is the need to continue to monitor the situation on the ground and also monitor importantly issues of climate change.
His comments follow recent calls by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Minority in Parliament on government to declare a state of emergency to get more relief items for the affected residents.
But Mr. Abani said “I don’t think we are at the point of declaring a state of emergency. I think we are yet at a point where we can call this national emergency and we must remain vigilant and continue to work together with everybody. I think we can all work together”.
Mr. Abani also said communities beyond the bank of the river must also be monitored to avert any disaster.
He was speaking to Adom News reporter, Shine Acquah during a visit to the area to assess the situation and donate relief items to the victims.
Mr Abani also applauded NADMO for providing relief items to the victims.
