Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, has cleared the air on her comments about the Akosombo Dam spillage.
The Minister, while addressing the flood situation, asserted that the victims refused to relocate despite numerous warnings from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and other state agencies.
A section of Ghanaians have take to social media to criticize the Minister for the insensitive comment.
Others also accuse her of playing partisan politics with the issue when flood victims are in dire need of assistance.
However, on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, she said her statements had been misconstrued.
She indicated that her statement was not as partisan as purported.
“My message was centered on water, education, and how to improve our water system. I never related the Akosombo dam spillage to politics, the EC, or votes,” she clarified.
Over 11 districts across 4 regions have experienced severe forms of flooding following the spillage of the Akosombo Dam which commenced on the 15th of September, 2023.
Hundreds of homes have been submerged in several communities across three regions, with about 30,000 residents being displaced as a result of the flooding incidents.
Through efforts of the National Disaster Management Organization and the Ghana Navy, some victims have been evacuated to safe havens, where they are being housed and provided some relief items.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the victims of the spillage to desist from drinking water from the Volta Lake, for their safety.
