The Minister of State-designate for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has called for a national dialogue to review the recruitment process within the public sector.
She emphasized the importance of efficiency, meritocracy, and transparency in hiring practices to ensure better governance and service delivery.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, Ms. Akanvariba outlined her vision to strengthen public sector operations, focusing on capacity building, institutional strengthening, and leveraging technology to combat corruption and enhance productivity.
She stressed the need for fairness in the recruitment process, stating that inefficiencies in hiring negatively impact governance.
“I will prioritize training and capacity building in the public sector while strengthening institutions. We must also reassess how we recruit into the public sector, and I believe a national dialogue is necessary to ensure a fair and merit-based process,” she said.
Akanvariba also highlighted the role of digital transformation in improving public sector efficiency and reducing corruption.
“Many people associate the public sector with only the civil service, but it includes numerous agencies. We need to leverage technology to streamline processes and minimize corruption,” she stated.
She concluded by reaffirming her commitment to driving reforms that will modernize the public sector and enhance its role in national development.
