Airport cocaine smuggle saga: Suspended workers reinstated

-

The Ministry of Transport has confirmed the reinstatement of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) staff members who were implicated in a cocaine smuggling case at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

This follows investigations into the incident, which occurred on March 23, 2024, involving the smuggling of 8.5 kilograms of cocaine aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight, allegedly facilitated by a GACL employee.

The drugs were seized at Brussels Airport in Belgium.

After the arrest, GACL suspended the implicated staff members pending further investigation.

However, during a session before the Government Assurances Committee in Parliament, Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, revealed that the employees have been exonerated and reinstated.

He also addressed concerns over the rising cost of domestic flights.

He indicated that, if ongoing talks with stakeholders fail to resolve the issue, the government may take steps to regulate flight prices.

This development is part of the government’s commitment to airport security and transparency, as well as its broader efforts to manage transport costs within the country.
