Legal counsel for Daniel Owusu Koranteng, Kofi Essel, has criticised the police over what he describes as a rushed and baseless murder charge against his client.
Koranteng, a former associate of the late investigative journalist Ahmed Suale and Managing Director of ISPY Company, has been remanded in custody on a provisional charge of murder in connection with Suale’s assassination.
Speaking to the media after the court proceedings, Mr Essel expressed strong disapproval of the police’s handling of the case.
“The police hurriedly put a charge together on the offense of murder. First, they were talking about abetment; today, we were surprised with a charge sheet containing one count of murder. They prayed to the court to remand our client with no basis. I describe this as a shambolic charge sheet,” he said.
The lawyer further alleged that the case against his client is built on weak foundations, consisting merely of allegations and hearsay rather than concrete evidence.
According to the lawyer, they are going to deal with the matter in the law court.
“Because they have nothing on our client. It is just a multitude of allegations and hearsay that have been put together. It is just for someone’s career to shoot up, and someone has to go down; that is what they are doing—just a mere witch-hunt,” he added.
Koranteng’s remand comes as the latest development in the long-unsolved murder of Ahmed Suale, a journalist with Tiger Eye PI who was assassinated in 2019.
His killing sparked widespread concerns about journalist safety in Ghana, with calls for justice mounting over the years.
