The Ahafo Regional Minister-Designate, Charity Gardiner, has pledged to prioritize menstrual hygiene by supplying sanitary pads to girls in basic and senior high schools (SHS) once approved by Parliament.
She made this statement during her vetting session on Friday.
The nominee highlighted that the inability of some parents to purchase sanitary pads for their girls is negatively impacting their education, with many girls skipping school during their periods due to embarrassment.
Through the Charity Gardiner Foundation, she has been supplying sanitary pads to girls in her community for years and plans to extend the initiative to other parts of the region once approved.
Additionally, Madam Gardiner emphasized her commitment to women empowerment, noting that many women in the region run businesses at a loss.
She intends to provide expert training to help women run more profitable businesses.
Ahead of the 2024 election, former President John Mahama also promised the distribution of free sanitary pads to girls in basic and SHS schools nationwide, aiming to alleviate economic hardships faced by Ghanaians.
