The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Ato Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has expressed his willingness to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in the 9th Parliament if given the opportunity.

“If the opportunity is given to me, I will love to lead and will do all I can,” he said.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Mr. Afenyo-Markin noted that the decision to lead the caucus rests solely with the party.

“It is a political party, and a lot of factors will come into play. Leadership in Parliament is not your bonafide right; it is within the party’s mandate to decide,” he explained.

Reflecting on his political journey, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said that he initially did not have the opportunity to serve in higher leadership positions during the party’s first term in office.

“When we came to power in our first term, some first-timers had opportunities to serve. I didn’t have that opportunity, but I stayed focused and did what I had to do. Over time, the party placed me where I am now,” he said.

He reiterated his readiness to take on the responsibility if nominated.

“If they think, based on my qualifications, I am the right person; I will be honored to lead. I will give it my all and create a formidable force in Parliament, just like the group of 1997,” he added.

He also stressed the importance of unity and teamwork within the caucus.

“With the men and women we have now and those coming on board, I hope we can come together to work regardless of our numbers. It’s not just about the leader; it’s about building a team that can deliver for the party and the country.”

Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the party would need to carefully consider various factors before making a decision on leadership roles.

However, he remains optimistic about the future.

“We will continue to work hard, and should the opportunity be given, I will do my best to strengthen our parliamentary team,” he added.
