Adongo urges Speaker to direct Sports Minister on GFA security measures

The Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, Isaac Adongo, has urged the Speaker of Parliament to direct the Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams, to ensure that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) enforces stricter security protocols at match venues—or face the possibility of suspending football in the country.

His call comes in the wake of the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong, who was fatally stabbed at Nana Kronmansah Park during a Matchday 19 fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Kotoko.

The Ghana Premier League has since been suspended, with the GFA facing intense criticism over its failure to implement adequate safety measures at match venues.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, Mr. Adongo stressed the need for immediate action to prevent further violence at football matches.

“The information we have is that this young man [Pooley] had been threatened prior to the match, and the security agency should have known that what happened to him could happen,” he said.

“I would like to call on you [Speaker of Parliament] to direct the Minister of Sports to take this matter very seriously and that if the GFA cannot follow rigorous protocols for licensing our football stadia, we should not be playing football as a country.

“Football is a serious business, and it is about life,” he added.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko resumed training on Wednesday, February 19, but has declared that the team will not participate in any official matches until justice is served.

The suspect, identified as Brimah, remains at large and is being pursued in connection with Frimpong’s death.
