The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has backed the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s proposed policy to introduce a fixed rate on imported spare parts if the party wins the December 7 elections.
During the NDC’s manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, on Saturday, August 24, flagbearer John Dramani Mahama announced that this policy aims to ensure transparency in the charges applied to imported vehicle consignments.
Speaking to Citi News, the Association’s head of communications, Takyi Addo, mentioned that while they appreciate the equalization of charges policy, they are still reviewing the policies of both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before reaching a final decision.
“Four months ago, former president [John Dramani] Mahama came to Abossey Okai to meet the spare parts dealers and we mentioned fixed rates. That is going to solve at least, some of our challenges at the port. It [fixed rate] is a constant value. The 20-foot container which we paid 5000 is fixed. It can be there. 10 years, 15 years—it is fixed. It is there. It doesn’t change. So I think fixed rates are going to solve some of our problems at the port.
“So we welcome it. It is very good and so we embrace it. So far, we are going through their [the NDC’s] manifesto. None of them [political parties] can solve our problem at a go but gradually, we will get there.
“We are going to digest and go through all the two major political parties manifestos, and we will come out with strong statements.”
