The Paramount Chief of Anlo Afiadenyigba in the Volta Region, Torgbui Dasebre Kadzehlo IV, has issued a stern warning to residents, particularly young women, about the serious consequences of engaging in abortion.

The Chief emphasised that abortion is considered a grave sacrilege in Anlo land, attracting both cultural and spiritual repercussions.

During an interview with Joy News, Torgbui Dasebre Kadzehlo IV spoke passionately about the sanctity of life and the deep-seated cultural values that the Anlo people hold dear. He reiterated that the practice of abortion not only defies the community’s moral and ethical standards but also attracts severe penalties from traditional leaders.

“Abortion is not just a medical issue; it is a violation of our sacred traditions and customs,” Torgbui Dasebre Kadzehlo VI stated. “In Anlo land, every life is precious and must be protected. Engaging in such acts dishonours our community and disrupts the harmony we strive to maintain.”

The Paramount Chief’s pronouncement comes amid growing concerns about the rise in abortion cases among young girls in the region.

He stressed that traditional leaders would take stringent measures to address this issue, ensuring that anyone caught engaging in or aiding abortion would face the full weight of customary laws.

“Our traditions are clear on this matter. Those who flout these customs will be dealt with accordingly. We must uphold the values that have been passed down through generations and protect the sanctity of life,” Torgbui Dasebre Kadzehlo noted.

The Chief also called on parents, educators, and community leaders to play a proactive role in educating young people about the importance of adhering to cultural norms and the potential consequences of their actions. He called for increased awareness and counselling to guide the youth in making informed and responsible decisions.

In response to the Chief’s declaration, community members expressed mixed reactions. While some lauded the move as necessary to preserve cultural integrity, others called for a more compassionate approach that considers the complex socio-economic factors leading to abortions.

As the community grapples with this sensitive issue, the Paramount Chief’s message underscores the importance of respecting cultural heritage and the collective responsibility of safeguarding the values that define the Anlo society.

The traditional leadership’s firm stance serves as a reminder of the enduring significance of customs in shaping the moral fabric of the community.
