‘Aayalolo’ drivers accuse management of sabotage

-

Drivers of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), popularly known as Aayalolo, are accusing Management of sabotage.

The drivers who have not been paid for the past eight months say the entity’s management have grounded the buses to prevent them from working.

The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), operators of intra-city transport service  has suspended services due to what they say are structural problems.

The break, according to them, is to enable them re-structure the company to ensure value for money.

But President of Aayalolo Bus Drivers, Foster Wiafe on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Thursday said Management of GAPTE was just being smart with them.

He explained that the suspension of service is just to buy time after the National Labour Commission (NLC) ruled that they should be paid their salary arrears.

Mr Wiafe said it will be very difficult for him to believe that Aayalolo is not making money when in fact, even rentals alone generate a lot of revenue for the company.

“During Greater Works, International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) rented 150 buses and paid GH₵1000 a day for each bus so they can’t tell me the company is not making money,” he asserted.

Mr Wiafe said the drivers are now on sit-down strike until their salary arrears are paid.

Meanwhile, Communications Manager at GAPTE, Fred Chidi on the same show said the suspension of service was a necessary evil.

He explained that the lack of structures has led to low patronage of the system resulting in the inability of the company to earn enough to cover operational costs.

Though the drivers and customers have been affected, Fred Chidi appealed for calm as the realignment is to ensure the system works effectively.
