In a dramatic turn of events, Attorney General Dominic Ayine has withdrawn all charges against former CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board(COCOCBOD) Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, as well as businessman Seidu Agongo, and Agricult Ghana Limited.
This move brings an end to the eight-year-long trial.
In light of this development, Dr. Opuni and Mr. Agongo have been acquitted and discharged of all charges by the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh.
The trial, which commenced in March 2018, initially involved 27 charges, including abetment of crime, defrauding by false pretence, and willfully causing financial loss to the state.
Despite being previously cleared of money laundering charges, Mr. Agongo and Dr. Opuni consistently maintained their innocence throughout the ordeal.
A State Attorney, Enam Loh Mensah, told the court on Tuesday, “My Lord, pursuant to this, the Republic has filed a notice of withdrawal.”
Counsel for Opuni and Agongo, Samuel Cudjoe and Benson Nutsukpui, told the court they had been served with the withdrawal notice.
