A-G to give reasons for discontinuation of high-profile cases – Kwakye Ofosu

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has said that the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, will soon provide reasons for the discontinuation of about seven high-profile cases.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Abura Asebu Kwamankese MP admitted that it was unusual for the Attorney-General to justify his decisions.

However, he emphasized that the move is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability.

“Yesterday, at the ORAL report presentation, he said that in the course of this week, he will engage the media to explain why he has made this decision,” he stated.

“In fact, it is not usual for an Attorney-General to offer explanations for issuing a nolle prosequi, but this Attorney-General has said that, in the spirit of accountability and transparency, and out of respect for the public, he will do so,” he added.

Dr. Ayine, barely a month after his swearing-in, has filed several notices of abandonment, indicating the state is no longer interested in prosecuting cases such as the ambulance purchase trial, Ofosu Ampofo’s alleged leaked tape, the Bank of Ghana’s new governor, Dr. Johnson Asiamah’s alleged role in the collapse of Unibank and UT Bank, and the Saglemi Housing case.

The move has attracted mixed reactions, with many questioning its basis and arguing that it sets a bad precedent.

However, Mr. Ofosu has defended the decision, claiming that the cases were politically motivated and that some of the individuals involved were unfairly targeted.
