A former National Security Adviser, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah, has expressed disappointment in what he describes as failure by government to deal with the increased crime rate in the country.
The retired General believes those charged with planning and providing security in the country have failed to discharge their duties.

“Nobody is working in Ghana; our security is poor and those in charge are not working but sleeping on the job. That is why we are being attacked by these robbers. Government needs to sit up because innocent lives are being lost and it’s bad for our country”, he said on Accra-based radio, Neat FM.

Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah’s comment follows a robbery incident in Tema on Wednesday resulting in the killing of a Lebanese businessman who had gone to cash Gh¢200,000 from the bank.
The deceased, Ahmed Safiadeen, aged 54, who is a cashier of Delta Agro Company, had gone to withdraw the amount from the bank as salaries for workers and other factory expenses of the company.
Prior to the Tema incident, another gang of robbers had stormed the Royal Motors offices at Industrial Area in Accra and made away with about Gh¢500,000 on Tuesday.

The former National Security Adviser believes the non-availability of jobs for the many “vibrant and desperate” youth has compelled them to resort to robbery to meet their needs.
Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah was of the conviction that there will be more of such attacks unless the government takes deliberate steps to address the unemployment situation.
“What do you expect when you have so many unemployed young men in the country? The government has failed to create jobs for them and so that is how they will also feed themselves so it’s up to government to take drastic measures”, he warned.
