Senior Dentist at 37 Military Hospital, Dr. Cornelia Alice Sallar has cautioned mothers who have made it a habit to feed their children with sweets on daily basis to stop because it is a major contributor to tooth decay among children.
Speaking on Nkwa Hia, a Health talk show on Adom TV on Monday with host Afia Amankwaah Tamakloe, the dentist said sugary foods are the best friends of the bacteria in everybody’s mouth, especially children.
“The bacteria in our mouth literally feed off of sugary food and then begin to coat your teeth with damaging acids and this can all happen in a matter of seconds and can occur several times over the course of just one meal, which is why it is recommended to brush your teeth after each meal to eliminate any bacteria,” she added.
Dr. Sallar also revealed that not checking on your children‘s teeth regularly is a serious recipe for disaster, because as the bacteria infection spreads, pus begins to collect making the area sensitive and painful.
“One thing you should realize is that if the tooth ache stops, the infection may not be healed and if the pulp in the root of the tooth dies, the pain may stop or lessen, but the infection may still be active and continues to spread and destroy tissue,” she said
The Dentist added that once that is happening, the affected tooth may be sensitive to cold or pressure from chewing or biting, hence the need to constantly check children’s teeth to prevent any danger.
She also advised parents to desist from using the dentist to scare children so that it will be easy to take them to the hospital for teeth checkups.
