The first Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu, has proposed a ruthless shoot-to-kill strategy as the antidote to ending the galamsey menace.
Mr Osei Owusu said the strategy can be an effective way of dealing with the situation which has brought a lot of destruction to the environment, particularly water bodies.
According to the astute lawyer, the process of arresting illegal miners to be tried in the court of law has proven ineffective as only 95 suspects out of the 983, representing less than 10% have been convicted.

Speaking in an interview, Osei Owusu prescribed that the only viable way to clamp down on the menace is to be ruthless.
“The other time I said we should shoot people and people were not happy with that. [But] I still think that the way to deal with recalcitrant people is not to use the regular law system,” he proposed.

Blaming the communities for the unending menace, Mr. Osei Owusu said, “Many of them are complicit. They hide the perpetrators in the afternoon and they go in the night to go and destroy the water bodies.”

But security analyst, Prosper Nii Addo Nortey has described as unfortunate the shoot-to-kill proposal by the Second Deputy Speaker.
Nii Addo Nortey said the proposal is unfortunate and should not be entertained.

According to him, the speaker’s comment is a threat to the rule of law hence should be ignored.
