The suspect, Samuel Otoo, and Rita Otoo had been living together since they tied the knot on December 24, 2016.
According to the police, on April 14, 2017, Otoo accused his wife of stealing his money, which he had kept in their bedroom.
Rita’s denial of the accusation led to a quarrel between the couple the next day.
A police report on the case indicates that in the course of a scuffle, Otoo hit his wife’s head with a hammer and left the woman to her fate in their room, while he went to work.
Confirming the incident to the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Mrs Effia Tenge, said when Otoo returned home in the evening and found his wife dead, he took the body to a private hospital where the doctors confirmed that she was dead.
Funeral parlour
From the hospital, Otoo is said to have taken the body to a private funeral home for preservation.
At the funeral home, he allegedly told the managers that his wife had died of blood pressure when he was questioned about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Mrs Tenge said the police, based on a tip off, arrested Otoo, who initially denied killing his wife.
She said when the body was examined, it was realised that blood was oozing from the part of the head where she was suspected to have been hit with the hammer.
Otoo is said to have confessed to the act later and told the police that after hitting his wife with the hammer, he took the tool to his workplace.
