Bantama gang-rape: suspects are not minors – Judge rules

All perpetrators of the Bantama rape scandal in the Ashanti Region will be re-arrested and tried in a higher court as a judge has ruled that all of them are adults.
The suspects, who appeared before the Asokwa Juvenile Court have been referred to a higher court as investigations show they have all hit the adult age of 18.

What this means is that all suspects of the rape scandal will be re-arrested and tried before a circuit court. In December 2017, the suspects were arrested over a seven-member gang-rape scandal that occurred in Bantama.
The emergence of the video sparked a huge public outrage and the police moved quickly to arrest the three while they hunt for some others.

Appearing before an Asokwa District Court 1, the presiding judge Mr. Peter Oppong Boahen remanded the three who are juveniles themselves in order to allow their guardians or parents to be present in court before their pleas are taken.
The suspects who the police have identified as comprising of a Junior High School (JHS) and two Senior High School ( SHS) students will now appear before a Circuit Court Judge.
