It has emerged that more people are killed through road accidents in Ghana every year than through HIV/AIDS infection.
This trend, according to the National Road Safety Ambassador, Gabby Adu-Gyamfi is very worrying and has thus called on the Government of Ghana to give same attention given to the fight against HIV/AIDS to road safety campaigns.
“How many people die through HIV/AIDS infection in a year, but more people are dying through road accidents yearly but no one is concerned…,” he said.
According to the road accident victim, as many as 2,076 people died in road accident in Ghana in 2017; a figure which he said should be a cause of concern.
Out of the 2,076 people that perished, as many as 3,487 were motorists. Over 12,000 people were also injured in the accidents.
These startling statistics, Gabby Adu-Gyamfi is alarming and hence demanded that efforts be intensified to end road crashes in the country.
And the efforts to ending road accidents in the country, Gabby said would entail the removal of all unauthorized speed ramps from highways in the country. This, he said, will be his agenda for 2018.
“I will destroy all unlawful speed ramps on major highways and in towns…I will go there with soldiers and destroy them because they are causing havoc on road and leading to crashes and deaths on the road…,” he said.
Gabby Adu-Gyamfi has been leading road safety campaigns in Ghana.
