The Assistant Director of Ankaful Main Camp Prison, ACP Patrick Adzah is urging government to introduce non-custodial sentence system of punishment for law breakers to reduce congestion in the various prisons across the country.
He says the congestion in the prisons is putting pressure on the national purse but noncustodial sentences can help to ease it.
According to him, law breakers like cassava and fowl thieves, for instance, should be made to weed or undertake public cleaning activity for some months as punishment instead of sentencing them into prison custody to eat three times a day.
He made the suggestion after the Chief of Assin Atonsu, Nana Kwaw Fosu I donated bags of rice, oil, and GHC500 to put smile of the faces of the prisoners as part of the New Year festivity.
