Fight against galamsey laudable – AFAG

-

The fight against “Galamsey” is a laudable campaign, which requires efforts from all well-meaning Ghanaians and institutions.

There is no doubt that for some curious reasons, the laws governing small-scale mining have flouted with impunity to the detriment of river bodies.

This stage of the fight of the struggle requires smart regulation and action. What is needed are targeted actions and the will to implement the laws of the land. Thus, the EPA, Mineral Commission and the Ministry of Lands should intensify their monitoring activities with support from the Police service and security agencies to ensure that best practice.

AFAG believes that this campaign cannot be successful without the tacit support of Chiefs and local communities. We are therefore pleased to hear of their public support for the campaign.

We wish to indicate that the clampdown should not be/ is not an attack against one nationality, but the protection of water bodies and land which is our birthright.

We further call on the Minerals Commission to publish the rules and regulations governing small-scale mining.

Additionally, a dedicated call center should be set up for the citizens to report any suspected illegal mining.   The Ministry of Lands should publish clear guidelines for tackling this menace.

AFAG wish to urge all stakeholders; the media, political leader, traditional authorities and civil society to join hands in this fight. We wish to indicate that this fight would long and difficult but with resolve, it can be contained.

God bless Ghana.
