Mahama, Iddrisu, others can stop Konkomba, Dagomba clashes – MP

The Odododiodio MP says the wave of clashes between Konkombas and Dagombas in Accra could be stopped if respected people who hail from the three regions of the North are encouraged to talk to them.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye has suggested former President John Mahama, Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu and Interior Minister Ambrose Dery as some of the people who will be able to call for truce between the two groups.

“There should be a high powered delegation to speak to them [because] they respect their leadership,” he told Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s Newsnite Tuesday.

The former Sports Minister’s comment is in reaction to the bloody clash between the two tribes at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra.

At least two people have been confirmed dead with three in critical condition after some Konkombas and Dagombas clashed Tuesday.

Details of the cause of the clash are sketchy, but some people are attributing it to an old political and ethnic rivalry between members of the two tribes.

Similar clashes have been recorded in the past. Clashes in April 2015 between Dagombas and Zabarima traders left four people including a police officer injured.

Also a clash in November 2014 left two people dead.

But Mr Vanderpuye whose constituency extends to the area said the Agbogbloshie community is a volatile area.

“Everybody lives under stress so the least provocation there, will lead to explosion of tensions,” he pointed out.

He said he had witnessed a scene where some youth wielding various “serious assault rifles” fired several shots into the air to demonstrate their power.

“I wonder why a Konkomba [man] will beat his brother,” Mr Vanderpuye wondered.

He urged government to assemble a delegation of respected politicians from the North to intervene in the issue.
