Audio: Critics of Nana Addo don’t understand English – Henry Lartey

-

Leader of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Dr. Henry Lartey has mounted a spirited defense for President Nana Akufo Addo following his position on homosexuality in an interview on Al Jazeera last Sunday.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo never said in his interview that he will legalize homosexuality in the country as it is being speculated by a section of the Ghanaian public.
He is of the firm conviction that those criticizing the President especially members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) do not understand the English language.
“Nana Addo has said nothing wrong if you pay attention to what he said. He never intended to legalize homosexuality. I think those making unnecessary noise especially the NDC members don’t read and don’t understand English language” he said in a Facebook Live video streaming Tuesday.
The President of the Republic of Ghana, in an interview with Al Jazeera made a ‘controversial’ statement regarding homosexuality in his country.
During the interview, the journalist said, “I want to ask you, what is happening in your country, and homosexuality which I believe is illegal and punishable in your country. Why is homosexuality still illegal in your country?
Nana Addo in responding said, “This is social call for change if you like, I don’t believe Ghana so far, has no officially stronger coalition that has emerged which is saying change it”.
The journalist again asked if the President would get behind it but he answered, “I think it is something which is bound to happen”.
Following that interview, Mr Akufo-Addo has received a lot of flak from some Ghanaians because in their view, he has created a fertile ground for the legalization of homosexuality in the country.
But Dr. Lartey indicated that, the President never gave any indication that he was going to legalize homosexuality in the country therefore urged all Ghanaians to take their time and listen to the president’s interview and understand what he said.
“It is obvious the critics don’t read or probably they don’t understand the English language. They should go back and listen to the interview and appreciate very well what the President said” he noted.
