The Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat, Mustapha Ussif has denied reports that the secretariat is imposing an insurance policy on NSS personnel.
His comments follow claims that a new insurance policy introduced by the National Service Scheme.
Per the policy an amount of ¢15.00 will be deducted from each of the over 91,000 personnel posted this year.
This means each National Service Person would have paid an amount of ¢135 by the end of 9-months service period.
This works out to ¢12,402,585 which will be paid to insurance company, Glico.
The insurance package which takes retrospective effect from September 1 this year, will make GH¢3,000 available to service persons who suffer accidents that will keep them off their duties at user agencies for a month.
Those who suffer permanent or temporary disability through accidents during the service year will also be entitled to GH¢15,000 insurance cover.
In addition, the next of kin of service persons who die while undertaking the mandatory national exercise will receive the same amount from Glico Life.
There will also be free inter MTN calls for service personnel each month. A recharge credit of GHS5 for calls to other networks. Free browsing on Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Instagram, WeChat, Jobberman website, GLICO website. A 500 free SMS each month, 100% bonus on all MTN recharge made by personnel and a free movie viewing twice a year at Silver Star Cinema(s).
But some of the service personnel are unhappy with the mandatory deductions.
They see no reason why an amount of ¢15.00 would be deducted from their meagre monthly ¢559.00.
The personnel have the support of the former NSS boss who has rubbished the necessity for an insurance package.
Kpesa Whyte speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Friday argued the new mandatory insurance scheme for service personnel as “daylight robbery.”
Mr Whyte does not see the relevance of such an insurance scheme when personnel hardly die or fall sick whilst on service.
Reacting to the claims of Kpesa Whyte, the current NSS Boss, Mustapha Ussif said that the secretariat was not imposing the insurance scheme on the personnel.
According to him, he was presented the proposal by the NASPA Executive on 27th May, 2017 in which they demanded the institution of the Insurance Policy.
“If they have gone to their (NASPA) congress and had brought a proposal that they want insurance package, who am to say no…am very surprised that Dr Kpesa Whyte who is an immediate NSS Boss would be making such claim,” he said.
He furthered discounted claims that an insurance company affiliated to the NPP would be operating the insurance scheme.
“The insurance package is not for only one insurance, we have GLICO, Vanguard, Enterprise, GN Bank [and others]…how can all of them be sponsor of one political party,?” he quizzed.
He further expressed shock at he claims of the former NSS Boss saying that “as a former Executive Director I thought he would approach the current executives if there is any concern.”
