Victims of Peabo explosion in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern Region are to receive an amount of GHC 50 each as compensation.
On the 24th of December, 2015, there were heavy explosions on the site which created fear and panic in the area.
The blast from a quarry site belonging to M/S AKY Mining Services Limited along the Adeiso road occurred as a result of a naked fire getting into contact with ammonium dynamite.
The devastation caused many injuries while substantial properties were lost through the accident.
A welder, Ibrahim Mohammed, 38, met his untimely death when he was caught in one of those explosions.
Ministerial Committee set up to investigate the explosion recommended a ten-year ban on the operations of A.K.Y Mining Services Limited which is still operating.
The victims have since been demanding compensation from M/S AKY Mining Services Limited.
Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery announced on the floor of Parliament that M/S AKY Mining Services Limited has paid an amount of GHC 100,000 as compensation to be distributed among the 2,000 victims affected by the disaster.
Responding to a question on the floor of the house by the Member of Parliament for the area, Ambrose Dery said GHC 100,000 is not enough so the Attorney General has advised the affected persons or families to take legal action against AKY Mining Services Limited for damages for loss of lives and injuries.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for the area, also described the compensation as woefully inadequate and called on government to assist the victims on humanitarian grounds.
“I am appealing to the President to please help with the compensation package and help the victims just as he did when he was an opposition leader…,” he said.
