The government through the Sports Ministry has given $10,000 prize money to the Ghana Weight Lifting Federation for winning six medals (1 gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze)at the just ended 2017 African Youth and Junior Championships in Uganda.
The team also won two medals at the Commonwealth Championships in Gold Coast Australia and qualified 4 weightlifters to the next Commonwealth Games due in Australia in 2018.
According to the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah,President Akufo-Addo gave them the money in appreciation of the feat they have chalked.
He called on other sport federation to emulate their example to accelerate Ghana sport.
“This shows that we appreciate what you have done, therefore I would like to use this opportunity to tell all the federations that they should go out there and win their various competitions and when they come back they will be rewarded adequately” Hon. Asiamah added.
The Ghana weightlifting Federation is set to continue their talent hunt, development and create sustainable growth of the game in the country.
They currently have over 40 young boys and girls below age 13 who trains at their training centre every Saturday.
