Hot Audio: We were warned of Atomic gas explosion – survivor narrates

A trader who also survived the gas explosion that occurred at the Atomic junction in Accra  Saturday, has said traders around the fuel station were warned 20 minutes to the explosion and started fleeing from the scene.

According to Linda Agyemang, the gas leakage at the facility is not strange to them since they were aware of the problem a long time ago.

Narrating her ordeal on Adom FM’s Morning Show “Dwaso Nsem” Monday, the survivor, Linda Agyemang said they ran not because of the threat the explosion posed to their lives but they thought the world was coming to an end.

She noted that it has been a normal practice for those who ply their trade around the area to witness gas leakage each time authorities are about to offload a new product for sale.

“We always know there is a leakage at that particular gas filing station but we don’t take it serious because it didn’t explode till last Saturday when a driver ran to us informing us of the leakage.

“Initially we didn’t want to run but we listened to his advice and run for our lives and after 20 minutes we heard an explosion. We thought the world was coming to an end” she cried.

The explosion and fire struck at about 7 pm at the Mansco Gas Filling Station and caught an adjacent petrol filling station, setting ablaze many vehicles at a nearby taxi and commercial bus hub.

The explosion has so far led to the death of seven people with over 132 people sustaining various injuries.

Some of the deceased persons are said to have been run over by speeding vehicles in the course of the pandemonium.

In a statement signed and issued by the Minister of Information, Mr Mustapha Abdul Hamid on Sunday, government commended the GNFS and sister security agencies for their work during the gas explosion.

According to her, their shops located at Domi-Kwabenya was not too far from the accident scene so when the fire started wafting in the skies, she thought that they will certainly catch fire, hence, their decision to run away
