The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has blamed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the recent power outages in parts of the country.
Intermittent power cuts in various parts of the capital have caused agitation, with several consumers venting their frustration at the power distribution company and accusing it of introducing the long hours of power outage (dumsor).
According to the ECG, the recent blackout in some parts of the capital was caused by a “power trip at the intake point from Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO)”.
“It was a fault so power from GRIDCO was not coming in for us to distribute. As engineers work on it, we will look at areas that will not have power and give an announcemen,” the ECG said at the time.
Although ECG says the power outages have nothing to do with load shedding, the PURC is asking Ghanaians to demand explanations from them.
Public Relations Officer at PURC, Nana Yaa Gyantuah says the current situation is not a generational problem and so ECG is in a better position to explain the situation to Ghanaians.

Meanwhile Ishmael Agyekumhene of the African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has warned that if the current trend is not addressed, the country will go back to load shedding.
He blamed the fault on the lack of maintenance by ECG.
But the Deputy Power minister John Jinapor has denied claims that the country is going back to ‘Dumsor’, insisting there is enough power for the country.
He disclosed that Ghana is currently importing power from Ivory Coast to meet local demand.
