Pastor Mensa Otabil has used Sunday sermon to publicly react to news of the collapse of Capital bank which his church, the International Central Gospel Church, had shares.
“The reality is, there are people when you are down, they feel up” he told the congregation in a sermon about facing reality which he defined as “when you hear stuff you don’t want to hear”.
One news the head pastor has not been happy was the withdrawal of the licence of Capital Bank Monday after it was diagnosed as severely distressed.
Otabil who is CEO and consultant of Otabil and Associates had 3% stake in the bank while ICGC which he founded also had 3% shares.
Since the collapse, the Bank of Ghana has said it is investigating the board of the defunct bank and its top management. Their accounts have also been frozen, the central bank has said.
While state institutions take up the matter, social media has been awash with trolls poking fun at one of Ghana’s most influential pastor and statesman.
Others have also criticised the man of God questioning why Capital bank sunk under the watch of the leadership and entrepreneurship guru.
Wearing his iconic heavy African dress, the motivational speaker admitted, he has had a tough week. Pastor Mensa Otabil laughed it off in church with an observation that “people who look like an insult to themselves are insulting you”.
“And you say wow, thank you, Lord, for mercy. For giving him grace to insult you because if God had not given them permission they would not insult you”.
He explained the motivation for people who rejoice in the misfortunes of others is because they have little to show for in life.
“They are happy that somebody is down, because they have been down for so long that when you are down they feel like they have climbed”.
“Sometimes, people you have helped will kick you when you are down, people you have encouraged will kick you when you are down”.
He said Christians must watch their thoughts and take hold of their minds in times of difficulty lest they go about blaming others for a misfortune.
