Residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region have called on the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to reinstate their suspended District Chief Executive (DCE).
Assemblyman for Nkronua Electoral Area, John Kwaku Dankwa who led the calls said the reinstatement of the DCE complained that the District lacked a leader to steer their affairs and hence his reinstatement was critical.
The DCE, Daniel Appianing, vacated his post and handed over to the Deputy Central Regional Minister after the President, through the Ministry of Local Government, directed him to step aside, while investigations continued into the gruesome murder of a military officer, Major Maxwell Adam Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi.
Major Mahama was lynched by residents of Denkyira-Obuasi after he was mistaken for an armed robber.
The DCE of the area accused the military officer for his the death.
According to him, Capt. Mahama and his colleagues from the 5th Infantry Battalion who were deployed to wage war on illegal mining, were instead protecting illegal miners.
Mr Appianing was therefore suspended after public anger over his comments.
“We want the President to reinstate our DCE because we need someone to steer affairs of the District…this is our core message to the President ahead of his visit to Denkyira Obuasi…,” he said.
He further added that the absence of substantive chief executive has stalled development in the area.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will visit Denkyira Obuasi as part of his six day working visit to the Western and Central Regions.
