Why I left Hearts of Oak – Samuel Boadu opens up

Former Hearts of Oak head coach Samuel Boadu has shed light on the reasons behind his unexpected departure from the club, despite enjoying strong support from fans.

Boadu, who previously managed Medeama SC, guided Hearts to a Ghana Premier League title and two consecutive FA Cup triumphs during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Phobians claimed five trophies in just 18 months—a remarkable achievement by any standard.

However, a dip in form led to tensions between Boadu and the club’s management.

Speaking on The BKB Show, he revealed that a lack of appreciation from key figures within the club made it difficult for him to continue.

“Honestly, I can’t fully explain why I left. Maybe the bad run influenced some opinions, but even then, I had just won the FA Cup,” Boadu, who is now the head coach of Berekum Chelsea, said. “Some members of management didn’t appreciate what I achieved. It became a heavy burden. So, to allow peace for Togbe and the club, I decided to step aside.”

Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, Boadu expressed deep admiration for Hearts’ Board Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV, with whom he shared a close personal relationship.

“I often mentioned Togbe’s name after matches, and many didn’t understand why. He’s more like a father and brother to me. His guidance went beyond football; he advised me on personal matters too. Togbe is a good man. If it were just him at Hearts, I would have stayed for 50 years,” he added.
