Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George has reaffirmed that his loyalty lies with the Ghanaian people, not Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), despite lobbying pressures from industry players.
In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, April 15, George stated, “I am the Minister for Communications for the Republic of Ghana, and my fidelity is to the Ghanaian people.”
He emphasized that the interests of ordinary Ghanaians will always take precedence in every policy decision made by his ministry.
Responding to questions on balancing regulation with industry cooperation, he highlighted that while the government works with MNOs, it does so with a focus on protecting consumers and safeguarding the national interest.
“We welcome private sector participation, but they must understand that this space will not be run solely for profit at the expense of the public good,” he remarked.
George also reiterated his commitment to transparency and fairness in regulating the telecommunications sector, underscoring that consumer protection remains a top priority.
“The days when telcos could run roughshod over regulatory frameworks are over. We are enforcing the rules and demanding accountability,” he added.
