Lawyer defends NPP activist’s post about Vice President

-

Enoch Afoakwa, the lawyer for New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Mohammed Amadu Zakou, has clarified that his client intended no harm with his social media post concerning Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

Zakou was arrested on April 4, 2025, over a Facebook post implying concern for the Vice President’s health, which read “Rest well, Her Excellency,” alongside crying and sad emojis. This followed reports that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was unwell but recovering in the United Kingdom.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, lawyer Afoakwa confirmed Zakou authored the post but argued it was meant as a goodwill gesture rather than malicious intent.

“When you Google the meaning of ‘rest well,’ it does not suggest negativity. The emojis are subject to legal interpretations, so I won’t delve into that. During his interrogation by the National Intelligence Bureau, Zakou explained his intended meaning behind the emojis,” Afoakwa said.

He added, “My client meant well for the Vice President. She is a national asset whose well-being is important to all Ghanaians, especially since she is cared for with public funds. His post was an expression of concern, not ill will, and I believe he will be exonerated before the law.”

Meanwhile, the Achimota Circuit Court on Monday, April 14, granted Zakou bail at GH₵100,000 with two sureties. He has been charged with the offence of publishing false news and is required to report to the investigator weekly.

The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.
