Sam George criticizes Appointments Committee for ‘losing focus’ during vetting

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has raised concerns over what he described as an unfocused line of questioning during his recent appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, the Minister expressed disappointment that much of the over five-hour vetting session was spent addressing his past political commentary rather than his qualifications and vision for the communications and digital technology sector.

According to Sam George, a significant portion of the questioning, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, strayed from matters relevant to his new ministerial portfolio.

“A man must stand by what he believes in. And when people see the Appointments Committee as a platform to settle scores, to basically exact vengeance, it’s unfortunate. I thought Afenyo-Markin or any other person could have asked a number of questions related to the sector,” he said.

The Minister further lamented that the committee had missed a valuable opportunity to explore his plans and technical expertise for the industry.

“Not my opinion on the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, or the former president [Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo]. I honestly thought that a golden opportunity was lost at the vetting to dive deep into the sector. I thought that the committee lost its focus in that regard,” he added.

Sam George, who previously served as the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has long been vocal on national issues, but he emphasized that the vetting should have concentrated on his ability to lead and transform Ghana’s digital and communication landscape.
