Government partners SMEs to tackle plastic waste crisis

-

The government has partnered with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as part of efforts to address the country’s growing waste management challenges, with particular attention on plastic waste.

Under the initiative, selected SMEs involved in recycling and waste-related ventures are receiving financial support and grants aimed at promoting a circular economy while creating job opportunities.

The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Mohammed Murtala, who supervised the distribution of approximately $300,000 to each of the 10 beneficiary SMEs, stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the use of the funds.

“We should all be conscious and monitor how the monies will be utilised. I do not need a dollar or a cedi from you. You need to use the money for the intended purpose, and I will be doing the monitoring because this is just the first tranche,” the Minister cautioned.

The initiative is expected to strengthen local recycling efforts, reduce plastic waste pollution, and encourage sustainable business practices across the country.
