KNUST introduces “Ananse’s Science Spin” – A cultural twist on research communication

-

Digital Communications Unit under the University Relations Office of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has launched a research communication podcast series that blends science, storytelling, and culture.

Dubbed “Ananse’s Science Spin”, the podcast is a creative initiative aimed at simplifying complex scientific ideas through the power of African folklore.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary trickster and storyteller, Ananse, the series uses local wisdom, relatable analogies, and engaging narratives to make science more accessible to all, especially young people, non-scientists, and the wider public.

Each episode of Ananse’s Science Spin takes listeners on a journey where science meets culture. With a vibrant mix of humour, curiosity, and creativity, the podcast demystifies research findings by weaving them into stories that resonate with everyday life in Ghana and beyond.

The series is part of KNUST’s broader efforts to promote inclusive science communication and foster a deeper appreciation for homegrown knowledge systems. It also reflects the university’s commitment to innovation in research dissemination.

Episodes are expected to cover a wide range of topics, from climate change and health innovations to digital technology and food security, each reimagined through the lens of folklore and cultural metaphors.

“With Ananse’s Science Spin, we’re bridging the gap between science and society by telling our own stories, in our own voice. It’s about making research not just understandable, but meaningful to the everyday Ghanaian,” said Emmanuel Kwasi Debrah, Assistant Registrar in charge of Digital Communications.

Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, Head of University Relations, also emphasized the strategic value of the initiative.

“This podcast reflects KNUST’s vision to be not just a hub for knowledge creation, but a leader in knowledge sharing. By anchoring science in our cultural context, we are strengthening public trust in research and expanding its impact,”he said.

Listeners can follow the series via KNUST’s official platforms including Focus FM and join the conversation using the #AnanseSci.
