Akufo-Addo’s nephew breaks ranks with Bawumia

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its presidential primaries in 2026, a wave of early endorsements is beginning to reshape the political terrain, with stakeholders, stalwarts, and youth groups declaring support for potential candidates.

In a surprising turn, former Deputy Director of the Danquah Institute and ex-Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has openly broken ranks with former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Boakye-Danquah, who is also a nephew of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has declared his support for the former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

He made this endorsement public through a post on his social media platforms, sending ripples through the party, especially given his ties to the inner circles of the NPP and his prominence as a communicator during the Akufo-Addo administration.

Currently a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and a respected royal from the Akyem Abuakwa State, Dr. Boakye-Danquah’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost to the #Ken2028 campaign, especially among young professionals.

The endorsement, alongside that of former Education Ministry spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng, signals a growing perception that Kennedy Agyapong enjoys stronger grassroots and youth appeal within the party, thanks to his charismatic, no-nonsense persona.

This development also fuels speculation that President Akufo-Addo may not be throwing his full weight behind Dr. Bawumia, contrary to earlier assumptions—particularly after recent closed-door discussions among some Minority MPs at Rock City Hotel in Kwahu.

As a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), and a respected royal from the Akyem Abuakwa State, his support is expected to galvanize many young professionals behind the #Ken2028 movement.

The endorsements by Dr. Boakye-Danquah and Kwasi Kwarteng, former spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, further reinforce the growing perception that Kennedy Agyapong resonates more strongly with the youth and base of the NPP, largely due to his charismatic and relatable personality.

This development also lends weight to ongoing speculation that President Akufo-Addo may not be backing his former Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, as was previously rumoured—especially following recent discussions among Minority MPs at Rock City Hotel in Kwahu.
