The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has announced that the government is developing a strategy to export Ghanaian labour to countries in need of skilled workers as part of efforts to reduce unemployment in the country.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr. Pelpuo stated that Ghana has been receiving increasing requests for its labour force from countries around the world. He emphasized the need to explore international job opportunities for unemployed Ghanaians, especially given their reputation for quality and professionalism.
“Beyond the domestic set, what we can do to tackle unemployment is to look at how we can export Ghanaian labour to other countries that need us,” he explained.
Dr. Pelpuo revealed that several countries, including those in Europe, Canada, the Gulf, and parts of Africa, have expressed interest in Ghanaian workers. Recently, he met with the Ambassador of Barbados to Ghana, who requested Ghanaian nurses.
He highlighted the high regard for Ghanaian workers abroad, noting that the demand for their skills is a testament to their professionalism. “The Ghanaian is such a quality person… our capacity to articulate and present ourselves professionally is recognized everywhere,” he added.
The Minister also shared that his ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish bilateral labour agreements with interested countries. He further assured that any efforts to send Ghanaian workers abroad will be under proper legal and ethical standards to ensure their safety and dignity.
“We’ll make sure they are properly treated, respected, in good health, and paid well according to what they do so they don’t go and get disrespected,” Dr. Pelpuo stated.
Additionally, he mentioned plans to coordinate and monitor the export of labour to prevent any exploitative practices, ensuring that all workers are properly informed about their destinations and conditions.
