The Suame District Court in the Ashanti region has remanded into military custody seven soldiers and one civilian employee for allegedly brutalizing two civilians to death in Kumasi.

The eight accused include LT. Selim Nikoi Neequaye, LT. Emmanuel Abrokwa, LT. Daniel Osae, Sergeant Kumi Edmond, Lance Corporal Ameyaw Desmond, Private Ampah Felix, Private Gyekye and Thomas Adjei Mensah, a civilian employee at 4Bn.

All eight were charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. They are accused of arresting and physically attacking two civilians over claims of stealing a mobile phone belonging to another individual.

The deceased, Kwame Adu and Kwabena Sarfo, were alleged to have stolen an IPhone at Asafo and taken to the 4Bn barracks for interrogation by the accused soldiers on March 28, 2025.

Family of the two say the two were severely beaten by the soldiers and later dumped in a bush at Danyame resulting in their death.

According to the police prosecutor, Detective Inspector Justice Ativor, the police “through the collaboration with the Military Command, arrested the suspects. In their respective cautioned statements, admitted having apprehended the victims for interrogations and later dropped them off at Danyame but denied having beaten them.”

In an earlier press release issued on April 2, 2025, the Military High Command confirmed that the civilians sustained various degrees of injuries and assured the public of a thorough investigation into the incident.

Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, assured that any personnel found guilty will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

When the suspects appeared in court, the prosecutor pleaded with the court to remand them into prison custody, but counsel of the suspects pleaded they are placed into military custody, which was heeded by the presiding judge.

All eight are remanded for two weeks to reappear in court on 22nd April 2025.

Family members of the deceased who were in court demanded justice for their relatives.
