A heated debate unfolded on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme following allegations made by the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, regarding two aircraft allegedly linked to drug trafficking and money laundering.
Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), called for the arrest of Rev. Fordjour, insisting that he must substantiate his claims or face legal consequences. Gyamfi argued that in other jurisdictions, such serious allegations against a sitting government would not go unpunished if found to be false.
“In other jurisdictions, he would have been blacklisted,” Gyamfi said, adding that if the MP refuses to honor a National Security invitation, he should be arrested and compelled to provide evidence.
“If he doesn’t honor the invitation [by National Security] to him and he thinks he can hide behind his parliamentary privileges, he’s in trouble. Some of us will insist that he is arrested and must substantiate that.”
However, the Ranking Member on the Defence Committee, Rev. Fordjour, was undeterred.
“Sammy, I dare you to call them to come and arrest me right here in the show,” he retorted.
The debate follows the Minority’s demand for transparency from National Security over the matter, after an air ambulance and a private jet reportedly stayed in Ghana for several days before departing for Gran Canaria, a Spanish island.
Rev. Fordjour, citing intelligence, claimed the aircraft might have been transporting illicit substances, including cocaine and large sums of U.S. currency.
Government officials, including the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, have dismissed the allegations as baseless, accusing the MP of spreading disinformation without verification.
