GRIDCo restores power after national system disturbance

-

A widespread blackout that affected major parts of the country on the night of Thursday, April 3, has been fully resolved, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) confirmed in a statement.

The national power outage, which disrupted electricity supply in parts of Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Bui, Tumu, Sawla, and other areas in northern Ghana, was triggered by a fault on the Tafo-Nkawkaw transmission line at exactly 20:09 hours.

According to GRIDCo, the initial fault led to a cascade of failures across adjacent lines, causing the shutdown of several power plants.

This sudden drop in power generation resulted in widespread blackouts, especially in regions beyond Kumasi.

“GRIDCo’s System Control Centre (SCC) sprang into action immediately, initiating emergency measures to stabilise the national grid,” the company stated. “Restoration of supply to affected areas began swiftly, and by 22:57 hrs, full power had been restored.”

GRIDCo also offered a sincere apology to the public for the inconvenience caused.

“The Ghana Grid Company sincerely apologises to the general public for the disruption,” said Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of Corporate Communications at GRIDCo.
