A total of 127 youth have graduated from the AngloGold Ashanti Enterprise and Skills Development Centre in Anyinam under the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP).
The initiative, aimed at providing sustainable job opportunities in mining communities, saw the graduates receive start-up equipment to launch their businesses.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony on March 27, 2025, NAELP National Coordinator Frank Asare emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining (galamsey) by offering alternative employment opportunities.
He noted that through partnerships with AngloGold Ashanti and GIZ, trainees acquired skills in welding, metal fabrication, electronics, fashion, and leatherwork.
“As part of our agreement, three viable SMEs in Obuasi will also receive support to scale up and create more jobs,” Mr. Asare said.
He announced that GIZ had provided €200,000 worth of start-up equipment to empower the graduates, describing it as an investment in the future of Obuasi and Ghana.
“The tools you are receiving are symbols of hope, empowerment, and opportunity,” he stated, urging the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity to transform their communities.
Mr. Asare further called on large-scale mining companies and development partners to collaborate with NAELP to expand such initiatives across all mining communities.
