Serie A: Udinese host Verona as Inter Milan travel to Atalanta

-

A ‘black and blue’ derby between Atalanta and Inter Milan headlines Matchday 29 in Italy’s Serie A this weekend, while Fiorentina will try to claim the scalp of Juventus.

Atalanta and Inter will meet at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on the late evening of Sunday 16 March, with this clash set to have a key effect on the battle for the Scudetto. The visiting Nerazzurri will back themselves to overcome La Dea yet again, having claimed seven successive wins in this rivalry across all competitions. In addition, Atalanta have not beaten Inter in a competitive match since way back in November 2018.

Nonetheless, La Dea manager Gian Piero Gasperini believes his team is right in the mix to challenge for the title: “I think Atalanta’s campaign has been extraordinary and we are very proud of that,” he emphasised

“We’re also getting into the latter stages of the season that become decisive with many games starting to weigh on the top clubs. There are many hidden dangers out there, which is what makes Serie A so fascinating.”

With at least one of Inter and Atalanta guaranteed to drop points, Napoli will look to pile the pressure on the pair by winning earlier on Sunday when they play away to strugglers Venezia. Partenopei manager Antonio Conte has warned his team against complacency – having seen them suffer a defeat in similar circumstances to Como a couple of weeks back.

“We have to be very careful,” said Conte. “Scoring one more goal than the opposition is my preferred approach, but we always work on balance between both phases. It happens, you can go on a run of clean sheets or concede regularly. What matters is consistency in results.”

The weekend also sees Fiorentina and Juventus renew their rivalry. La Viola have often felt ‘bullied’ by Juve, who have routinely bought the Florence side’s best players down the years. The teams played out a cracking 2-2 draw in December last year, with former Juve striker Moise Kean scoring a late equaliser for the team in purple.

Elsewhere, the weekend’s action opens on Friday night at the Communale Luigi Ferraris Stadium with Genoa hosting Lecce, while Saturday’s action is headlined by AC Milan hosting Como. Sunday will also see the Rome clubs in action, with Lazio away to Bologna and Roma hosting Cagliari at the Olimpico Stadium.
